GIZMODO DAY? On August 12th, Gizmodo readers around the world will be celebrating Gizmodo day. Gizmodo staff in New York and San Francisco will be organizing meetups, and they want readers here in flyover country to organize their own meet-ups.
It looks like no one around here has grabbed the torch, but if I am wrong about that, someone let me know.

SOCIAL MEDIA COSTING BUSINESSES BILLIONS – British employment website MyJobGroup.co.uk said it polled 1,000 British workers and found that nearly six percent, or 2 million, of Britain’s 34 million-strong workforce spent over an hour per day on social media while at work, amounting to more than one eighth of their entire working day. MyJobGroup.co.uk said that work time lost on Facebook, Twitter and other social media networks could potentially be costing Britain up to 14 billion pounds ($22.16 billion). [via the Washington Post]
LACK OF APPS HOLDING BLACKBERRY BACK? – CNNMoney suggests that may be part of the problem.
ST. LOUIS COWORKING GETS A NICE WRITEUP – Check out Tim Logan‘s article about St. Louis Coworking on STLToday.com if you want to get a nice feel for what’s going on with co-working downtown at the Shell building:
“Combine a glut of empty office space with a growing “freelance economy” and what do you get? Maybe you get a new way of thinking about what it means to go to the office. That’s the thinking behind St. Louis Coworking, a new home for freelancers, one-person shops and the self-employed that opened this week in the Shell Building downtown. It’s the latest in a string of these sorts of collaborative workspaces — offering low overhead, month-to-month leases and an idea-bouncing vibe — to open in St. Louis in the past few years. And it’s probably the highest-profile effort yet.”
EXPEDIA ADDING MISSOURI JOBS - Online travel giant Expedia plans to expand its operations and add jobs in Springfield, Mo. The company currently employs nearly 300 at its Springfield office and could add as many as 500 more. However, this comes at a price: Missouri Rep. Gary Nodler, R-Joplin, introduced an amendment to a bill signed July 8 by Nixon that exempts Expedia and others from paying municipalities’ hotel and motel sales taxes, the Springfield Business Journal reported.
“Apparently there are 16 or 17 states in which Expedia is involved in similar litigation and is making legislative efforts,” Nodler told the paper. “Missouri is the first state to adopt a law clarifying this issue. I’m told by Expedia that while they were looking at an expansion in the state of Missouri, because of the effect of this law, they anticipate a greater emphasis on business activity in this state. They believe it will result in an increased number of employees created at a facility in Springfield.”

KURT GREENBAUM QUIETLY EXITS STLTODAY – Quietly in the sense that I only happened upon this item by accident, and I haven’t heard much chatter about it online, and that stands in stark contrast to the last time Mr. Greenbaum was in the news, . If you recall, he took action against a vulgar commenter on the Post’s message boards that ultimately led to the commenter resigning from his job. Anyway, it seems Mr. Greenbaum has left his post as the online news director at STLToday.com to go to work as the St. Louis editor for Patch.com, a “community-specific news and information platform dedicated to providing comprehensive and trusted local coverage for individual towns and communities”. Patch.com is owned by AOL.
INFORMATION OVERLOAD? – It is a byproduct of our life and times, I am afraid, but you are not helpless against it. WebWorkerDaily has a great series on dealing with it. This link points to part 2, but it is very easy to link back to the first post from there. Lots of good advice there I am already implementing, as I suffer from this condition.
SEND US YOUR NEWS - Try as I might, it is getting harder and harder for me to scour the interwebs for all your great events and other information. I know that I am not seeing many great events until it is too late to talk about them, and that’s ok…social media doesn’t need my help, it does a nice job of spreading the word about things all by itself. But if you would like your news shouted out to the readers of this site in addition, send it on over to me. There is a contact form above, or you can email me directly.
Have yourself a great weekend!
