Sooner or later, Twitter has to start making money. Bloggers have been speculating about how they should do this for months now. Surely Twitter itself has been thinking about it too. There have been hints and insinuations in the past, but on Friday we got a relatively detailed look at one of Twitter’s new plans to monetize their micro-blogging service.
From the Sacramento Business Journal:
Twitter Inc. says it will roll out paid accounts by the end of this year that businesses can use for marketing, customer relations and other strategies.
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone told the Venturebeat blog that these new accounts will include statistics and analytics that aren’t now available, helping businesses see how effective their use of the micro-blogging tool is.
Stone said some accounts are already being tested by a few anonymous companies.
Twitter’s lack of revenue despite raising $55 million in venture funding and more than 44 million users has promoted much speculation about what it will do.
Stone has said that it was more important to build the user base and see how the uses of Twitter developed before committing to a business model.
Stone also told Venturebeat that Twitter had considered buying FriendFeed before Facebook Inc. did.
“We’re at a point where even though we’re only two years old, acquisitions are definitely possible,” Stone told the blog.
